Romeo Ese Michael, Esq.

Romeo Ese Michael, Esq. is the Head of Chambers and Associate Partner of D.A. Awosika, SAN & Partners, LLP. He attended the Anambra State University where he obtained a degree in Law. Whilst at the University, he played an active role in the Moot Court and eventually was appointed the Chief Judge of the Moot Court of the Law Faculty. He presided over the election into the office of the then President of the Law Student Association of Nigeria.

 

Immediately after his excellent performance from the University, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Abuja and was called to the Bar in 2009 and he came out with a Second Class Upper Division (2.1). He did his compulsory National Youth Service Corps in Bauchi State and was posted to the Ministry of Justice, Bauchi State. Owing to his flair for law practice, he was seconded to the Law Firm of Asahab Chambers in Bauchi where he cuts his legal teeth. He had the occasion of appearing at the Sharia Court and took the permission of the Kadi to conduct his trial in English Language. His practice areas then were Bauchi, Gombe, Jos and Abuja.

 

In 2011, he sets up Synergy Legal Consults. He has been in active law practice ever since 2009. In furtherance of his academic pursuit, in the year 2014; he got admission into the University of Lagos for his Master of Laws program in Maritime Law, the Nigerian Law of Secured Credit Transactions, and Tax Law. His project paper titled: “The Legal Impact of Technology on Rule of Evidence in Nigeria” made him attracted to the LLM Coordinator (Ogunniran Ph.D.) of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. After obtaining his Master of Laws Degree (LL.M), he was invited by the said Coordinator to help highlight some areas where improvements can be effected in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos; this he did alongside with other Professors of Law.    

 

He has a flair for litigation and good at legal research. In 2012, he brought to D.A. Awosika SAN & Partners LLP his wealth of experience and consistency in delivering varieties of legal services to clients and his result-oriented approach to adversarial adjudicatory process, makes him an invaluable asset to our firm and clients.

 

He has in the course of his employment with the Firm of D.A. Awosika & Partners LLP developed great adroit in Intellectual Property Practice, Maritime Law Practice, Law of Secured Credit Transaction, Insolvency/Bankruptcy Law, Aviation Law, Commercial & Corporate Litigation, Real Estate Law, Information Technology Law and Banking law. He was one of the Lawyers who joined the lead Counsel (D.A. Awosika, SAN) to prosecute before the Supreme Court of Nigeria the cases of  Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria vs. Compact Disc Technology Limited (2019) 4 NWLR (Pt. 1661) 1 and Adeokin Records vs. Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (2018) NWLR (Pt. 1643) 550. These cases are locus classicus in copyright law in Nigeria as they relate to the copyright Collective Management Organization and the right of an assignee/exclusive licencee to protect its copyrighted works without getting the approval of the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

 

In 2017, he attended a Course on “Information Technology and the Law” at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. The training he got has made him to be an expert in the field of information technology law in Nigeria. He on yearly basis attends the Nigerian Law Maritime Seminar on topical issues in maritime law as being organized by the Nigerian Maritime Law Association.

 

Romeo, the Head of Chambers/Associate Partner in our firm has appeared in all the Courts in Nigeria including the Supreme Court. He has prepared and argued Briefs of Argument before the Appellate Courts. He involves in Company secretarial Services and as a result he is a Director in DAAP Nominees Limited. He has over the years had the opportunity of handling cases against some notable Senior Advocates of Nigeria and outstanding Legal Practitioners. As of date, he has been licenced, accredited and approved by the Corporate Affairs Commission to practice as an Insolvency Practitioner pursuant Section 704 of Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020.  

 

Romeo lives in Lagos with his wife (Florence) and three children (Royal, Radiance and Royce). He attends Victory Baptist Church, Lagos and serves as the Church’s Secretary. He is presently the Legal Adviser to the ‘The Anointed Generation Baptist Association” and currently serves as member of the Scholarship Board of the Lagos West Baptist Conference. He loves politics and desires to be in active politics subsequently. He has traveled widely both local and international.
